Conditions for Road Work
Contractors must follow these conditions for work in the City of Bridgeport:
- Work can not be started until a permit has been approved and issued.
- Only Licensed contractors can apply for road excavation or sidewalk excavation permits.
- You must apply for a permit with the city of Bridgeport for sidewalks on state roads.
- Work must be done within the 30-day permit period. If work will take longer, you must renew the permit, or risk jobs being shut down.
- Permit and traffic plans must be on the jobsite at all times during work.

- Overtime police must be contacted first for traffic control. Only if there are no available officers are you allowed to use certified flaggers.
- Road work is to be saw cut in straight lines.
- Backfill must be compacted every six inches to prevent settling.
- Once asphalt is laid and rolled, all edges must be sealed with a bituminous sealer.
- Cold patch or reclaimed asphalt is only allowed when asphalt plants are closed. Permanent Restoration must be done when asphalt plants open.
- Steel plates are not allowed during the winter months.
- Excavations greater than 100ft will require daily trenching logs.
- Cylinders for Concrete testing may be required for sidewalk work at the expense of the contractor.
- Inspection for sidewalk must be done when forms are set. And again, when sidewalk is completed post inspection.
- Sidewalks must be 5 inch thick or match neighboring concrete.
- Sidewalks must be broom finished.
- Expansion joints must be placed every 20 feet.
- Additional information or inspections may be required at the direction of the License and permits office.
- Road Closures are never allowed unless a traffic plan with proper detours is submitted to and approved by the engineering department.
