The City of Bridgeport has established an Energy Improvement District to promote the planning, development, and funding of energy-related activities. The Board seeks to promote the BGreen 2020 plan to increase the efficiency of energy use in the City of Bridgeport, and attract commerce and industry.
The EID Board has begun examining the following projects on behalf of City:
The Energy Improvement District allows Bridgeport to generate and sell local renewable power and buy power in bulk to reduce costs.
- Anaerobic Digester- The Board is exploring the idea of constructing an anaerobic digester at one of the City’s waste water treatment plants to increase the efficiently of the waste water plants, reduce green house gas emissions and save the City money by reducing the amount of waste that needs to be hauled away for disposal.
- Solar Photovoltaic Array - The Board was instrumental in developing a solar photovoltaic array on the existing Seaside Park Landfill site.
- Energy Supplier Services- The Board has solicited proposals from Energy Suppliers licensed in the State of Connecticut to provide a service contract package for City residents and businesses to help reduce energy costs on their monthly utility bills.
The purpose, responsibilities, and structure of the Energy Improvement District are outlined in the city ordinance (13.10).
