Prior to drilling a well, you need a permit because it involves drilling a hole into the ground to access groundwater, which is a valuable resource. A well permit is a legal document issued by a government agency that regulates the drilling and use of wells. The permit ensures that the well is constructed safely and properly, and that the groundwater is protected from contamination. Additionally, the permit process allows for the evaluation of the water source to ensure that it is adequate for the intended use and that the well is located in a safe and suitable area. Overall, a well permit is necessary to protect public health and ensure the responsible use of a shared natural resource.

Well Permit Application

The laws in Connecticut prevent the person in charge of public health in a local area from giving permission to drill a well at a house where people will drink the water, or at a business where people might drink the water, if there is already a public water system within 200 feet of the property. However, in some cases, they can make an exception to this rule. The form below is used to ask the Drinking Water Section if the Director of Health can make an exception. Even though the Director of Health is the one asking for the exception, the form helps the property owner gather the information needed for the Department to review the request.
