Bridgeport, CT – Mayor Ganim joined 368 leaders from cities and towns throughout the country during a virtual conference with the United States Conference of Mayors and the National Urban League to encourage Congress to pass the bipartisan infrastructure bill announced by President Biden.  The bipartisan group of mayors sent a letter in support of the Infrastructure Framework to Leader Schumer, Speaker Pelosi, Leader McConnell, and Leader McCarthy; viewable here. The letter and virtual conference both outlined the need for immediate action and the historic opportunity to reinvest in communities with the largest long-term investment in infrastructure in nearly a century. 

 

“This is a unique opportunity to make a lasting impact on our city and throughout the country. We will be able to make meaningful progress on infrastructure projects if this legislation is passed – projects which will improve our quality of life, public safety and transportation, and strengthen the economy and our communities,” stated Mayor Ganim. “We urge Congress to support and pass this significant bipartisan bill to make our cities more resilient and sustainable while creating jobs and addressing so many of the needs and concerns of those that we serve.”

 

Executive Member of the USCM, Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner stated, “There is no doubt that our cities are the heartbeat of this country. We are the nation’s economic engine, and we are the hub of creativity and innovation. But American cities cannot be expected to thrive with failing infrastructure and an aging transportation system. We are long passed the point where we can simply apply band-aid solutions and then hope for the very best.” 

 

The Bipartisan Infrastructure Framework will provide funding for public transportation, roads, bridges, passenger and freight rail, drinking water and wastewater, clean energy and electrification, legacy pollution cleanup, cyber-attack and extreme weather-resiliency, and universal broadband access.
