Bridgeport, CT – Today, Lieutenant Governor Susan Bysiewicz and Mayor Ganim visited Waltersville Elementary School in Bridgeport to announce the CT Summer Meals Program. The program is funded by the USDA and state-administered by the Connecticut State Department of Education (CSDE). The CT Summer meals program allows for access to free, nutritious meals to kids during summer break, which can be found at hundreds of sites throughout the state from June to late August. Many sites serve a combination of breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks made freely available to any child age 18-and-under.

“The CT Summer Meals Program is incredibly important for our children in Bridgeport,” Mayor Ganim stated. “We have a collective need in the City and it’s amazing to know that our Bridgeport families will have access to nutritious meals throughout the summer. I would like to thank the Connecticut State Department of Education, End Hunger CT, Connecticut Foodshare, and all other partners who have pushed to make this happen for our children.”

The administration of the program first began in 1974 and maintained its purpose to provide access to nutritious meals to children throughout the summer to coincide with meals they receive during the school year. The program is also noted to help combat summer learning loss which is usually found in children who don’t participate in enrichment activities during their time away from school.

Sites and locations where meals are provided can be found on the interactive map, located on the End Hunger Connecticut (EHC) website. To view coverage of the Lieutenant Governor’s visit to Bridgeport, visit the City of Bridgeport Facebook page.
