Listeriosis

Listeriosis is a serious infection usually caused by eating food contaminated with the bacterium Listeria monocytogenes. It can affect people of all ages, but it's most dangerous for pregnant women, newborns, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems. Listeria bacteria are widely present in the environment, including soil, water, and animals. They can contaminate food at many points during processing and storage, from farm to table.

Symptoms of Listeriosis can include:

  • Fever
  • Muscle aches
  • Headache
  • Stiff neck
  • Confusion
  • Loss of balance
  • Convulsions
  • Diarrhea

If you think you might have Listeriosis, it's important to see a doctor right away. Early diagnosis and treatment with antibiotics can help prevent serious complications.
