Boar's Head Provisions Co., Inc., from Jarratt, Va., is recalling all liverwurst products they have in stores because they might be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced today. The company is also recalling other deli meats made on the same day and on the same line as the liverwurst since they might also be contaminated with Listeria. About 207,528 pounds of products are being recalled.

FSIS urges people not to eat the recalled products and to throw them away or return them. Retailers should not sell these products and should clean their refrigerators and surfaces thoroughly to prevent cross-contamination.

The problem was found when the Maryland Department of Health tested a sample that came back positive for L. monocytogenes. This sample was part of an outbreak investigation. The FSIS, CDC, and state health departments are looking into the multistate outbreak. As of July 25, 2024, 34 people in 13 states have been reported sick, with 33 hospitalized and two deaths.

Eating food contaminated with L. monocytogenes can cause listeriosis, a serious infection affecting mostly pregnant people, those aged 65 or older, and people with weakened immune systems. Symptoms include fever, muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, and convulsions, sometimes preceded by diarrhea or other stomach issues. Pregnant people can experience miscarriages, stillbirths, premature delivery, or life-threatening infection of the newborn. Listeriosis is treated with antibiotics.
