City Council Approves Rev. Sara D. Smith as 132nd District Council Member
Bridgeport, CT – Last evening, the Bridgeport City Council approved the appointment of Rev. Sara D. Smith to fill the City Council vacancy in the 132nd District left by Marcus Brown who has since taken office as State Representative. Mayor Ganim administered the oath of office to Smith immediately following her appointment.
Councilwoman Smith brings a plethora of knowledge and experience to the City Council. She is the senior minister of Bridgeport’s United Congregational Church and President of nOURish Bridgeport, a local non-profit centered around providing healthy food and social services to thousands of Bridgeport families. Most recently, nOURish Bridgeport launched Connecticut’s first Indoor Hydroponic Farm. Smith is also an attorney, having earned her law degree from the University of Houston Law Center, and worked as a former trial attorney for the U.S. Department of Labor. She is currently the only attorney on the City Council.
Mayor Ganim stated, “I have confidence that Councilwoman Smith will represent the 132nd District with passion and integrity. She has made it her life’s work to serve the most vulnerable in our community. We are very excited to have her join the City Council.”
Council President Aidee Nieves stated, “The Bridgeport City Council was pleased to welcome Sara Smith as a new member of our body last evening. She brings a unique perspective to the Council as a lawyer, minister, non-profit leader. I look forward to working with her on the important issues facing our city.”
Rev. Smith will serve the remaining portion of the council term vacated by Marcus Brown, which expires on November 30, 2023. The senior Council Member for the 132nd is Rolanda Smith.
