5/24/2013 - Berchem, Moses & Devlin Law Firm Establishes College Scholarship For City Students

The law firm of Berchem, Moses & Devlin, P.C. has committed at least $20,000 to a scholarship program to mark its 80th anniversary. The “New Opportunities Scholarship” has been designated for deserving graduates of Bridgeport public high schools. Over the next four years, the scholarship will provide a different graduate each year a direct grant of $5,000 to be used for the college of his or her choice. The firm will consider renewing the program after the initial four years.

“This year, 2013, marks the 80th anniversary of the Berchem, Moses & Devlin law firm. As a way of celebrating our success and commitment to the region, we are offering a scholarship to help a high school student from Bridgeport fulfill his or her dreams for the future,” said attorney Robert L. Berchem, principal and president of the firm. “A college education is the foundation for a successful career and a fulfilling life. It opens the door to opportunities in an ever-changing world. And Berchem, Moses & Devlin is proud to help a student toward that goal.”

Mr. Berchem said a number of lawyers at Berchem, Moses & Devlin are the first members of their families to receive a college degree. “These talented men and women know the value of a higher education. They want to offer others the same opportunities they had to launch a career and to grow both professionally and personally.”

The scholarship will be awarded based on academic achievement and financial need. Applicants will also be asked to submit a 750 word essay on “What the scholarship means to me.” The selection of the scholarship winner will be made by Mr. Berchem; the Rev. Paul J. Fitzgerald, S.J., Fairfield University Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs; and two other partners from the law firm, Marsha Belman Moses and Richard J. Buturla.
