MAYOR GANIM, HEALTH DIRECTOR BOND URGE RESIDENTS TO TAKE CAUTION TO PREVENT EASTERN EQUINE ENCEPHALITIS VIRUS
EEE HAS CAUSED TWO CONNECTICUT FATALITIES THIS YEAR
Bridgeport, CT – Mayor Ganim and Health Director Maritza Bond are urging Bridgeport residents to take caution and use preventative measures to reduce Eastern Equine Encephalitis, (EEE), a rare but serious disease caused by a virus transmitted by mosquitoes. As of yesterday, mosquitoes in Lyme, Old Lyme, Groton, Ledyard, North Stonington, and Stonington have all tested positive for this disease.
To stay safe, it is advised that Bridgeport residents avoid outdoor activities or keep skin fully covered between dusk and dawn, which is when mosquitos are most active. In addition, be sure door and window screens are tight fitting, do not let stagnant water collect around homes, utilize mosquito repellent and mosquito netting when sleeping outdoors, and wash skin with soap and water after returning indoors.
