Bridgeport Fire Chief Thode Shares Tips On Holiday Fire Safety
Chief Thode Cautioning Residents when using Candles and Space Heaters

Bridgeport, CT – Bridgeport Fire Chief Richard Thode today is sharing fire safety tips with residents to avoid household fires during the Holiday Season.
“The Fire Department has seen and dealt with fires in the past stemming from candles, space heaters and overworked heating plants,” said Chief Thode. “Our goal is to try to prevent these types of fires that may simply occur as residents attempt to warm their houses.”

Holiday Fire Safety Tips

1. Candles- Make sure candles are completely blown out before leaving your home or going to sleep. Ensure curtains and clothing are away from open flames.
2. Space Heaters- Only use electric space heaters. Avoid stationing the space heaters near any upholstery and keep them away from curtains and clothing. Be sure to assess the cord each season to ensure it is in good shape.
3. Heating Units- Have a technician take a look at your heating unit (boilers, radiators, furnaces) to ensure they are in proper shape for service.

Chief Thode also used this opportunity to remind residents of the Free Smoke Alarm Program. For more information about the Free Smoke Alarm Program or to get your very own smoke detector, go to Bridgeportct.gov/SmokeAlarm.
