Mayor Ganim, City of Bridgeport Kick Off Farmers Market and Downtown Thursdays Concert Series

Local farmers, vendors and artist came together for the 5th annual Downtown Market at McLevy Green

Bridgeport, CT – Mayor Joe Ganim today joined local businesses, farmers, vendors and artist to kick off the 5th annual farmers market at McLevy Green. This year’s Downtown Market featured vendors selling baked goods, jewelry, cosmetics, produce and spreads just to name a few. What makes this year’s farmers market unique is it will also include art demonstrations and music performances.

“I am so excited for this year’s farmers market because we have more vendors than ever before,” said Mayor Ganim.  “This summer we have a diverse group of local businesses but also artist and musicians to make downtown even more lively this summer. The community will be able to come out during their lunch breaks or with their families to buy healthy food and hear great music!”

Kim Morque, Downtown Special Services District (DSSD) Chairman, said, “The Bridgeport DSSD is excited to host the 2016 Downtown Farmers Market at McLevy Green. Creativity takes many forms including food, music and performance art. The Farmers Market will serve to show-off this creativity while welcoming visitors from throughout Bridgeport.”

In addition to returning farms Smith Acres and Killam & Bassette Farmstead, DSSD will welcome many new vendors, including:

  • Baked goods from Downtown Bridgeport’s-own Leisha Bakeria,

  • The unique, home-made donut creations of Whisk+Brush,

  • The all-natural products of Organic Girls Cosmetics,

  • Fresh farm eggs of Hot Chick Eggs

  • The jams of Elegantly Casual Cuisine and

  • Fresh bread offered by Riverside Banking Company.

To make room for the market, Bank Street along Board Street and Main Street will be closed off to traffic to allow for a pedestrian walkway. The green painted walkway with spray painted art marks the entrance to the 14-week summer market.

Mayor Ganim’s new administration worked with Michelle Margo for months to bring a new vibe to Downtown Market.  The temporary closure of Bank Street’s pedestrian walk for the community to sit, eat and enjoy the beautiful atmosphere is a new element. This is also the first time ever that the Arts Festival will be incorporated weekly into the Farmer’s Market.

This year DSSD has partnered with the Bridgeport Art Trail and Karyn Leito of the Black Rock Farmers Market to bring Bridgeport’s artistic talent to the Downtown Market. Each week the Downtown Market will host music and art. The Downtown Market kick-off included guitarist Glen Roth and visual artist and body painter Alicia Cobb.

The farmers market will take place every Thursday and run until October 27th. Starting July 21st, Downtown Thursdays evening concert series begins.
