“During this hot summer day, I’m urging residents who do not have access to air conditioning to please take advantage of these cooling stations that we’re providing.” – Bridgeport Mayor Bill Finch
Bridgeport, Conn. (July 19, 2015) – Today, Mayor Bill Finch announced that Bridgeport is opening cooling stations in response to the heat advisory issued by the National Weather Service.
A cooling station will open at the Greater Bridgeport Transit station at 710 Water Street from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. for kids and families.
Bridgeport Public Library main branch located at 925 Broad Street will also be open as a cooling station from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
“During this hot summer day, I’m urging residents who do not have access to air conditioning to please take advantage of these cooling stations that we’re providing,” said Mayor Finch.
Parents should monitor their kids’ outdoor activities and sports and be aware of any signs of heat fatigue or distress, especially mid-day when the sun is hottest.
“We are recommending that residents limit their exposure to the outside tomorrow during the alert period, drink plenty of fluids and as always seek shelter indoors in an air conditioned facility,” said Scott Appleby, Director of Emergency Management.
The Bridgeport Emergency Operations Center (EOC) continues to monitor heat advisory and air quality alerts that have been issued by the National Weather Service.
Here are some prevention tips to stay safe in the heat:
- Drink water regularly and often; avoid large amounts of caffeine and alcohol as it causes dehydration
- Stay indoors as much as possible. Avoid the sun and use SPF of 30 more if you have to be outdoors
- Wear lightweight, loose-fitting, clothing
- Get relief from the heat in air conditioned places such as libraries, malls, movie theaters, or places with air conditioning during the hottest parts of the day
- Electric fans may provide comfort, but when the temperature is in the high 90s, fans will not prevent heat-related illness
- Never leave children, seniors, or pets inside a closed vehicle. Do not leave pets outside for long periods of time
