After School at The Klein (ASK), a new, tuition-free
after school arts-education program at The Klein Memorial Auditorium, is
seeking talented students in eighth through 12th grades for its next
session. Young artist interviews will be held Jan. 18, 19, 24 and 25.
Eligible Bridgeport students, accompanied by a parent or guardian,
and interested in performing arts and media arts are, invited to
interview.
“ASK’s spring session begins Feb. 3, and our goal is to enroll 80
students across our curriculum areas,” said Cara Bertini, The Klein’s
director of development and education. “We offer professional
instruction in performing arts and media arts — everything from acting,
voice and dance to video production, screenwriting and design. Students
can also learn improvisation, African drumming, and hip hop dance. Our
top-notch professional staff includes Emmy-nominated and Tony-winning
performers, renowned puppeteers, filmmakers, designers and performance
artists. Best of all, the program is tuition-free for Bridgeport
residents.”
Bus transportation to the after-school program is available from
several high schools on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Parents are asked
to pick up their children at the end of the program day, and to drop
off and pick up their children for Saturday classes.
“This program evolved from our interest in giving back to the
Bridgeport community,” said Karl Gasteyer, The Klein’s executive
director, who had been an educator at the college and middle school
level, as well as an actor and theater administrator. “Our theater is
dark during the week, and what better way to bring it to life than with
the sounds and sights of enthusiastic students following their passion
for the arts?”
