10/29/2013 - Lighthouse students to show off skating skills in New York City

Mayor Bill Finch and the city of Bridgeport Lighthouse After School Program will send 65 Bridgeport students to participate in the 100 Day Countdown event to the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games to be held in New York City’s Times Square on Tuesday, Oct. 29, at 11 a.m.

During the event, some of the more advanced Bridgeport students will demonstrate skating skills learned over the past several weeks with their coaches, Olympic competitors Denis Petukhov and Melissa Gregory. The pair founded Eduskate, an educational and recreational skating program that teaches children basic through advanced skating skills, as well as safety and skating fundamentals.

“Our after school students will have a chance to be on the national stage to show off the skating skills they’ve learned through our Lighthouse After School sports skills program,” Finch said. “We’re incredibly proud of their achievements both on the ice and in school.”

“This trip will prove to be a once in a lifetime opportunity that I’m pleased our children will have the opportunity to participate in,” said Tammy Papa, director of the Lighthouse After School Program. “We look forward to an exciting day and great memories.”

The public is invited to the send-off event at Wonderland of Ice.
