BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – The Quinnipiac University men's basketball team enjoyed its annual trip to Achievement First Bridgeport Academy on Friday morning, just one of many community service events that the Bobcats take part in throughout the year. Head Coach Tom Moore and the Bobcats addressed the fifth grade class in a morning assembly before breaking up into individual groups to discuss the importance of studying hard in order to attend college down the road.
"We again appreciated the opportunity to meet with the children at Bridgeport's Achievement First Academy," commented Moore. "Our student-athletes always enjoy the chance to influence a young person's life and understand the impact of being role models in our community. I'd like to thank the administration at Achievement First, especially Judy Andrews, for their hard work in arranging this event with us."
After a brief introduction from Andrews, Coach Moore took the floor for a brief speech to discuss the importance education, athletics and the balance between the two. He then introduced the players by class, and explained that each individual athlete made it to Quinnipiac through hard work and dedication to the classroom and basketball.
"Having the QU Men's Basketball team at our school is inspiring and motivating for our scholars," said Andrews. "It is motivating because the players are positive role models who are focused on the true meaning of a student-athlete. As one of our scholars reported, 'the most important lesson she learned today was that she had to work hard to achieve her dreams.'"
After that, the student-athletes broke up into groups and participated in a Q&A session with the fifth grade class, as part of the school's mentorship program. The youngsters were eager to learn about each of the players and why they chose to attend Quinnipiac University.
Quinnipiac Athletics' Positive Play initiative is designed to encourage student-athlete involvement in the community. Quinnipiac is dedicated to the promotion and development of service, service learning, experiential learning, and civic engagement programs and initiatives that involve students in the local community and challenge them to critically examine the role their service plays in cultivating personal development and social change.
